Chairs are among the most elegant forms of 18th century furniture. But the
unusual angles and flowing compound curves that give chairs their grace and
beauty also make them a challenge to build.
This workshop will focus on techniques for building 18th century chairs. In
this six-day course, students will learn the steps to joining, shaping, and
construction as they each build an 18th century Pennsylvania side chair.
Topics Include:
-
History and
development of period chairs
-
Understanding the
framework of 18th century chairs
-
Constructing angled
mortise-and-tenon joinery
-
Sculpting cabriole
legs with rasps and gouges
-
Carving feet and
shells
-
Using hand tools to
create authentic details
-
Resawing the curved
back
-
Using a spokeshave
to smooth curves
