How Does Your School Differ From Other Woodworking Schools?

We limit the class size. In fact, our classes are typically half the size of other schools. This means you'll receive much more personal coaching and instruction, and you'll take home many more skills. Sure, we could run large classes like some woodworking schools do, but it wouldn't be to your advantage.

We also maximize your learning experience by milling the lumber for you--so that you can focus on learning skills instead of standing in line at the planer.

Finally, we emphasize fine craftsmanship. Nothing beats the personal satisfaction of having built a professional-quality piece of furniture with accurate tight-fitting joints, precisely-fit drawers, and a hand-rubbed finish.

"Having the stock milled was a definite benefit.
I could have milled my own but that would have severely 'cut' into my handwork time."--Rob F., MD

"The class size made the experience virtually one-on-one."--Norm M., OH

I'd like a systematic approach to learning woodworking, what do you recommend?

You should begin by taking Woodworking Essentials.  New woodworkers find that this course is a great introduction to woodworking as they learn valuable skills in a safe and enjoyable manner; experienced woodworkers have found this course extremely valuable in "filling in the gaps" in their background and learning a wide variety of essential techniques. Rest assured, this course will challenge you--no matter what your previous experience entails!

During the Woodworking Essentials Course, Lonnie will also give you guidance about which courses you may want to take next--those that fit your interests and abilities. If you're already taken Woodworking Essentials, and you have questions about which course is best for you, give Lonnie a call at 865-484-1145. He'll be happy to help you custom-design a sequence of classes.

How Do I Sign Up for a Class?

It's easy! Just go to the Registration Page and print two forms: The Registration Form and the Class Schedule. Send these, along with your check or money order (made out to Lonnie Bird, Inc.) to: Lonnie Bird's School of Fine Woodworking, 1145 Carolina Drive, Dandridge, TN  37725. We'll notify you as soon as we receive your registration and provide you with lumber and tool lists for your classes.

"I really enjoyed the small class, the individual attention, and most of all, learning my first set of hand skills."--Jack P., VA

What is Your Cancellation Policy?

We have a generous cancellation policy, which is outlined on the Registration Page.

When Will I Receive Tool and Lumber Lists?

By the end of the year we'll e-mail you a copy of the tool and lumber lists for your class. We find that this is the best way to provide you with information about the class. However, if you typically have difficulty receiving attached files via e-mail, please let us know and we'll send you the lists by US Postal Mail.

Can I Buy Lumber From You?

Although I don't sell lumber, you can conveniently purchase a lumber kit for your class from lumber suppliers, such as Jason Bennett, who mills and prepares it at his shop. Jason sells the lumber already cut to size and packaged for each of the classes. If you're interested you can contact Jason directly at 423-431-8492. Jason will also ship the lumber to my school so that it will be here when you arrive.  What could be easier?

What Are Class Hours?  Class meets from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. The shop is open at 7:45 am.

What about  lunch? To maximize instruction time, we provide lunch. Of course, if you have special dietary needs, you are welcome to bring your own.

"This has been a tremendously enjoyable week."--Julius H., SC

I notice your classes fill up quickly. How can I reserve a place in a class?

We post the new schedule on our website each fall; typically the week following Labor Day and you can sign up at that time. To be fair, we also e-mail an advance copy of the schedule to those who have been patiently waiting on the "waiting list" the previous year (usually a couple of days before we put the schedule on our website). Because of this, your best bet for getting into a class is to asked to be placed on the waiting list.

"The class was a lot of fun; in addition I learned an awful lot."--Robert B., NC
