Build a Virginia Corner Cabinet

Not offered in 2016…but ask Lonnie about adding it to a future schedule!

During the eighteenth century, the colonial craftsmen on Virginia’s eastern shore built some of the most beautiful corner cabinets of the period. Rich with architectural details, this reproduction features a true divided light door with twelve “lights” or panes of glass, “tombstone” lower doors with carved arches, scalloped shelves, hand-carved fluted pilasters, bracket feet, and lots of dramatic molding.

In this twelve-day class you’ll learn how to create the details of this unique, stately piece as you construct a corner cabinet of your own.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Forty-five degree corner cabinet construction
  • Constructing divided light doors with mortise-and-tenon joinery
  • Constructing arched “tombstone” panel doors with mitered sticking
  • Techniques for making perfectly mitered moldings

Note: The shop is air conditioned for your comfort!

Prerequisite: Woodworking Essentials. The Virginia Corner Cabinet is a very challenging project that requires considerable handtool skills. We want you to be prepared for this advanced course so that you will gain the most from your experience. Please read the Prerequisite page for details on our policy.

Class size is limited to six students so that you’ll receive personal attention and instruction.
