Build a Tall Case Clock
(Class size is limited to 9 students)
 Clock Class Photos

Instructor:     Lonnie Bird

Date:            Not Offered in 2009

The tall case clock (often referred to as a Grandfather clock) is among the most sophisticated and elegant forms of 18th century furniture.  The construction of the hood is complex because it houses the works and dial. Also, the arched door and the handcut dovetails combine to make this a very challenging project.

In this exciting class, you can choose between the high style gooseneck pediment with its carved rosettes, finials, and graceful curved moldings, or the simple, yet elegant flat top.

In this twelve-day course, you'll learn the necessary construction techniques as you build your own tall case clock.

Topics Include:

  • Constructing the case to fit the dial, works, and pendulum

  • Understanding the casework of tall clocks

  • Various methods for shaping the graceful gooseneck molding

  • Shaping the arched molding over the hood door

  • Construction of the hood door

  • Carving the flame finials and rosettes

Note:  Because of the complexity of this project, combined with the time limitations, you'll have to complete the turnings in your own shop. There is also a separate cancellation policy for this class; contact Lonnie for details.

Prerequisite: Woodworking Essentials  The tall clock  is a very challenging project that requires considerable handtool skills. We want you to be prepared for this advanced course so that you will gain the most from your experience. Please read the Prerequisite page for details on our policy.

"The student-instructor ratio is great and much better than at another school that I attended.
