Build a Dowry Chest
See additional Dowry Chest photos here
This beautiful little chest is packed with details including through dovetail construction, dovetailed drawers with arches, turned feet, line-and-berry inlay, and a hinged lid. Standing only about fourteen inches tall, the chest is large enough to provide storage and yet the compact size will fit anywhere in the home. Best of all, you’ll learn a lot of new skills as you build it.
Here’s a list of topics for the week:
Cutting and fitting through dovetails on wide, hardwood stock.
- Tricks for working with wide boards and making the dovetails fit.
- Shaping the arches on the chest and the drawers
- Line-and-berry inlay techniques for a flawless fit
- Constructing lipped drawers with an arch
- Interior drawer support
- Fitting hinges
This chest will look great when constructed of walnut or you can use other woods such as cherry or tiger maple. And you can choose to go with or without the inlay.
